With a rare appearance of the sun, it was the perfect evening for a visit to Fatboy’s Thai cafe. Having walked from Turnham Green tube, my partner and I had worked up a healthy appetite, and were delighted to be met with al fresco dining and a recently refurbished restaurant. The result is a contrast to the Asian flavours served, and instead epitomises the stylish designs of France or Sweden with distressed furniture, green chandeliers, and floral tablecloths. Oriental touches are subtle with fresh orchids dotted around, and illustrations of them in the pastel wall plaques.

Fatboy’s has occupied its location for over 15 years. By day it serves hungry office workers and locals with English food – pastries for breakfast, and sandwiches at lunch, alongside a Thai menu.

Like many people I am unadventurous when it comes to ordering, I have my favourites and don’t stray for fear of disappointment. As un-experimental as this may be, it provides a good comparison tool when dining at like-minded venues.

We therefore opted for a traditional starter of spring rolls, and were not disappointed. A stack of tiny rolls arrived beautifully presented with chilli sauce and a flower delicately wrapped in a ripe green leaf. The sauce was not for the faint-hearted and its hotness enhanced the flavours of vegetables and crispy batter. Thai Green curry and Pad Khing with chicken and noodles followed. Both were flavoursome and recommended, together with popular dishes of Pad Thai, (legendary in its own right among regulars).

Harking back to the days when Boy’s didn’t have a licence, customers can still bring their own beverages for a corkage fee, (£4 for wine, £1 per beer), or can choose from Boy’s own wine list. For a Wednesday night it was pleasantly busy and bring a bottle appeared to be a popular option.

For relaxed dining at reasonable prices look no further than Fatboy’s Thai cafe.
